The MotoGP™ Portuguese Grand Prix was first held in 1987 at Jarama Circuit in Spain, due to the main Portuguese circuit, Circuit do Estoril, not being ready for motorcycle racing. However, Portugal still wanted to host a race that season and therefore the Jarama circuit was used. The following year another Spanish circuit, Jerez, was used. These inaugural races make Portugal the only country to have hosted multiple Grands Prix under its flag and name, but in a country other than its own.

Between the years 2000 and 2012 the race then was held at Circuit do Estoril, and from 2020 to current day the MotoGP™ Portuguese Grand Prix has been held at Algarve International Circuit. Nine-time World Champion, Valentino Rossi holds the record for most Portuguese wins, with a total of five.
